NDIS Psychosocial Recovery Coach and Its Impact on Existing Support Coordinator Role.

  The Disability Reform Council of Australia approved a series of initiatives back in October 2019 to improve the accessibility and outcomes of NDIS services for people with psychosocial disabilities. Hence, in an endeavour towards focusing on recovery and mental health support, NDIS has introduced a new support item to help those participants primarily diagnosed with a psychosocial disability. Now they can receive psychosocial support from an NDIS funded recovery coach who has mental health knowledge. Participants can choose between a learned experience recovery coach or a lived experience recovery coach. The former is someone with learned knowledge and training in mental health while the latter can draw on knowledge based on their mental health illness and recovery. To know more about the qualifications and competencies of a recovery coach, you can approach a registered NDIS provider. The key thing to remember is that funding for a recovery coach is available to all participants with a primary psychosocial disability, unlike NDIS support coordination which is an overall role that may not always be included in your plan.
